As promised, the MIUI team over at Xiaomi today started rolling out the MIUI 7.1 update for certain Xiaomi devices. Unlike MIUI 7, this point release does not bring any major new changes to the tablet, but does add some minor new features like Mi Drop and new text size options.  Some of the features in MIUI 7.1 were initially supposed to be available in MIUI 7, but they never made it past the beta testing stage. These features are now being included in MIUI 7.1. As its name suggests, Mi Drop makes it possible to share data using Wi-Fi Direct/Hotspot to nearby devices without using your mobile data. Unlike Bluetooth, transferring files over Mi Drop is extremely fast and one can easily transfer a 1GB file in less than 5 minutes using it. MIUI 7.1 also introduces the Opera Max integration into the OS that Xiaomi had promised previously. With the ‘Data Saver’ mode enabled, you can route all your internet usage through Opera’s server that will compress all your web and in-app media traffic to reduce data usage. Additionally, the MIUI team has also included a new XS size font option, with MIUI 7.1 now offering a total of six different font size options. A detailed changelog of MIUI 7.1 with all the changes, improvements and bug fixes can be found over here. The OTA of MIUI 7.1 will be rolled out in stages to the Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi 4i, Note, Redmi Note 4G, Redmi 2 Prime, Redmi 1S, Redmi Note Prime, Redmi Note 2, Redmi Note 3G and Mi Pad over the next few weeks. If you cannot wait that long, you can download the ROM image from MIUI’s website and flash it manually. Doing so will not touch your installed apps and its data in anyway, so you don’t have to worry about creating backups as well.
